What Base Colour Tan Should I Be Using?

Before the opening of our new second salon ‘The Wax & Tan Suites’ we want to help you understand about what coloured base would best suit your skin and it’s underlying skin tone. Now you might be asking ”…base what? What does that even mean I didn’t know that existed?!”. Yes thats right you can get different toned tans for different skin tones!
At The Wax & Tan Suites we will be using one of our favourite spray tanning ranges – Black Magic Tan – and the varieties that this tan range offers are amazing. There is a base tone for every skin type.

There are 5 different types of spray tan that the client can choose from
• Green base
• Caramel base
• Violet base
• Brown base
• Chocolate base
Depending on the clients underlying skin tone our tan technicians will examine the clients skin and will choose the tan base best suited for the client. It is important to examine the skin before proceeding with the spray tan.
Not sure what the underlying skin tone is? The skins undertone is the warm, cool or neutral hue that shows through the surface of the skin. The skins surface colour changes depending on the sun exposure and other skin conditions. The skins undertone remains consistent regardless.
Your tan technician will assist in choosing the colour depending on whether the clients undertone is warm, cool or neutral. Looking at the colour of the veins on inside of the wrist or arm is the best way to determine your underlying skin tone. Making sure your skin is clean and free of product is also important.
If your vein appears blue or purple, you have an underlying cool skin tone. The green base tanning solution is the best for this skin tone. A green base will counteract any pink hue the skin will throw leaving you with the most natural looking tan.
If your veins appear green you have a warm skin tone. There will be a yellow or peach hue to your skin which the violet base range with help to counteract.
Sometimes you won’t be able to tell whether your veins are green or blue. This will mean that you will fall into the neutral skin tone category. You lucky ducks can choose a variety of the tanning ranges that Black Magic tan has to offer.
Bare in mind that not everyone will achieve the same tan, it all depends on your own skin. Think of when both you and a friend use the same tan but she somehow manages to get a darker deeper tan despite being paler than you naturally! It all simply depends on how your body reacts with DHA ((the active colourless chemical that interacts with amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a brown colour change)). Leaving a tan on longer than recommended by the manufacturer wont actually make you any darker, in fact it will just affect the tone of the tan, leaving you with an orange oompa loopma glow! And no one wants that!
To counteract this orange glow, those with very fair skin should use a lower DHA compared to those who would tan very easily in the sun. Fair skin ladies can still attain a beautiful tan but they won’t achieve the same depth and darkness as those with an olive skin tone.
Skin conditions play a significant role as well. Ideally the PH balance of the skin in the neutral zone provides the best possible conditions for your tan.
We decided to use Black Magic tan because of the in depth information they provide to help understand the type of product we are offering our clients. It has gotten great reviews around the world and has satisfied the skin of many! We cannot wait to have the ladies of wexford looking and feeling like the golden goddess’ they deserve to feel like!
